Best of luck with the surgery.  I imagine that by the time you read this you'll
be back from the hospital, and when you get there, I hope you can 
read this. :-)

Bummer on the cable problems.  Since you have your phone service 
dependent on your
cable service, you might want to invest in an el cheapo pre-paid 
cellular phone.
They're available here for bout $20 on sale, and while they're not 
cheap to use on
a per minute basis, it could be useful to have one since you're going 
to be stuck
in the house for a while with a flaky cable system.  If you don't use 
it, you're
not out much and you can always keep it for another time or sell it 
off on Ebay.
