Dirk used to love building things. His grandfather showed him how to use a hammer before he turned 5 and he loved pounding nails. Not sure if he'd still be into it. Also, his guests tend to be mostly girls and not sure if they'd be into construction projects either. He invited 4 girls and 1 boy to his party today. When Dirk told hiim on Friday that there were 4 girls coming and him he said, "Four girls!" Needless to say he knew all the girls, but it was evident he wasn't as comfortable around them as Dirk was. They all seemed to enjoy the Treasure Hunt which kept them busy for 50 minutes.
So..who's wedding are you planning now?

Dirk is getting to what Lorraine calls my "construction" phase. Starting when the oldest was about Dirk's age, I ran their birthday parties around a build-it project. I think at ten I pre-cut wood and gave them each small hammers and we made small bird houses.
If I remember correctly I took the projects from the cub scout handbooks.
We're into our fourth wedding planning routine here . . . except when Grandpa bugs out and goes to play with his two grandsons (who are getting ready to head down to Disney again with us).

I'm making you feel old???? I was reading a card he got from his aunt and in it it says that he's 3 years away from being a teenager. Now that scared me!
I'm glad I planned a treasure hunt for his birthday today that has them basically indoors (a few clues are outside) because it's raining here. Should be fun. Yesterday Rya went to a birthday party at Chuckie Cheese and I was disgusted. The kids got tokens and off they went. No one played together at all. There were 20 kids and I doubt any of them spent much time with the birthday girl. It just didn't feel right to me. Call me a traditionalist, but I still like parties at home, even if it is more work for me.

...Dirk was born. Yes, folks, in a few short hours (12:07 a.m. Eastern Standard Time) it's Dirk's birthday. It's hard to believe that 10 years has passed already and many of you were around when I Ieft for the hospital. He's grown up to be a pretty great kid who does well academically and already has a goal in life -- to be a Marine Biologist. Not sure that will happen since he may change his mind, but he sure does read an awful lot about fish! I've attached a photo of him we took on our trip to Canada this summer. We used this photo when he entered the National Geographic Kids Magazine contest for a trip next August to South Africa. Cross your fingers and say some prayers. He'd love to go and he did a great job with the essay he had to do for it. They choose 15 kids and 2 teachers and we think he's got a good chance. Of course, we're slightly biased. :-) If he does win, it'll be a battle in the Holzman house as to which parent will go with him. We can't afford to have the whole family go -- the trip is worth $20,000. They stay at very luxurious resorts - several hundred per night. I'll be sure to keep you posted.
Hope you're all having a great weekend!
Ingrid
