Thanks, Carole.  My hairdresser thinks Dirk's a real cutie and keeps telling me that I'll have to put a leash on him when he reaches his teen years.  He does have a soft spot for girls. :-)  Dirk is actually good to converse with now on various subjects.  He's into science kind of things which leads us into interesting questions.  As for real thoughts of their own...that would be Rya.  She's 6 going on 15!  Unlike Dirk, school is truly a social event, not an academic one -- in her eyes.  She's doing well, but tends to focus more on "Jimmy" than her subjects.  Rya loves doing gymnastics and soccer, but I think gymnastics is winning out.  She's a very girlie-girl in that she tries to be "fashionable."  She'll ask, "do I look fashionable?" as she tries on an outfit for school.  I blame it on Barbie!  She's definitely more dramatic than Dirk and is always singing.  I guess my theatre genes are rubbing off.

I've attached a photo of Rya at her American Girl breakfast that we did on Labor Day weekend.

         wow, i wondered how long we've been doing this.  we have it pegged down to at least 11 years now.  dirk is really growing into a handsome young  man.  he's at the age when they really start to get interesting as they have so many thoughts of their own.  hope he wins his contest.  my daughter went to africa on her honeymoon - awesome trip.  it wasn't cheap either (lol) as they also stayed in the luxurious hotels and resorts.  don't really think one wants to stay any where else.  she said they laughed a lot about what they call "luxury."  let's see a pic of rya too - she must have grown a LOT since we've seen her.  and catch us up on her.

        ...Dirk was born.  Yes, folks, in a few short hours (12:07 a.m. Eastern Standard Time) it's Dirk's birthday.  It's hard to believe that 10 years has passed already and many of you were around when I Ieft for the hospital.  He's grown up to be a pretty great kid who does well academically and already has a goal in life -- to be a Marine Biologist.  Not sure that will happen since he may change his mind, but he sure does read an awful lot about fish!  I've attached a photo of him we took on our trip to Canada this summer.  We used this photo when he entered the National Geographic Kids Magazine contest for a trip next August to South Africa.  Cross your fingers and say some prayers.  He'd love to go and he did a great job with the essay he had to do for it.  They choose 15 kids and 2 teachers and we think he's got a good chance.  Of course, we're slightly biased. :-) If he does win, it'll be a battle in the Holzman house as to which parent will go with him.  We can't afford to have the whole family go -- the trip is worth $20,000.  They stay at very luxurious resorts - several hundred per night.  I'll be sure to keep you posted.
