David,
I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. I hope it resolves itself soon.
I agree with you that Steve tended to take unnecessary risks. The incident
with Bob is definitely one that I was appalled by. Also, putting his face
up to that of a venomous snake as well as putting his hand near the mouth of
a crocodile. Those were foolish actions and he often got bit, albeit they
weren't deadly. I can't help but feel that he swam way too close to the
stingray that killed him. The barb was supposedly 8" long and in order for
it to impale his ribs/heart the way it did means he was right on top of the
ray, not 1 meter above it. He always got close to the animals he worked
with and this time it was deadly. I can only hope that others interested in
doing the type of work he did will recognize that his methods were not
always the most appropriate.
What are your thoughts about a State funeral? I recognize his importance in
Australia, but I'm not sure it warrants a State funeral. Talk about
hard-hearted! ;-)
