Fred,

I had seen the cell phone/gun video before, and also the 
pager/gun.  They're not high
tech and it's probably only a matter of time before they're both 
common in this country
as well.  As for turning on a laptop, that has been standard practice 
for several years.
I had gotten used to doing it a couple years ago while I was still 
traveling overseas
several times a year.  What with the (potentially) explosive sneakers 
that Richard Read
brought aboard a trans-Atlantic flight a few years ago, it's obvious 
that weaponry can
be built into very inconspicuous packages.  It's easy to see why the 
security folks are
nervous.
