Dick,
If you are running a router between your PC and your cablemodem (or DSL
or whatever) modem, the router has the public IP address. Each device
connected to the router from behind your network (be it PC, VOIP device, or
other Ethernet or Wireless device) is getting a private IP address from the
router (unless you chose to configure the network with static IP addresses
by doing it manually).
On my home network, I use static IP addresses on all of my devices. I
also have a WAP (wireless access point) for b and g and another WAP for a.
When I bring home my laptop from the University, it connects to my b and g
WAP and gets a private IP address from my router. I do support dynamic
addresses on my network for visitors and housemates. A fellow lives in a
room above me and has an Ethernet cable running down to my room. I have it
plugged into my switch. He gets one of my dynamic IP addresses when he
powers up his PC.
But anything that I install here permanently, I give a static address.
But them, I'm a much more Internet saavy person than the average user. The
average user has no need for static addresses and doesn't want to do the
work to assign them. Why should he? Dynamic IP addresses will work just
fine for his purposes. But some of the things I do on my network require
static IP addresses on my devices.
I'm about to send a tutorial on why IP addresses are the class that they
are.
Fred
