David - on the CNN.com website today there is an article on her and she did say she'd taken singing 
lessons in the past:

"Boyle began singing in school productions at 12. She had private lessons and won local 
competitions, but a professional career never took hold partly because of circumstances at home."

I think she is fabulous but I don’t believe a word of
it.  That is a trained voice if ever I heard one.  Add to that she is
so poised on camera and uses the mike absolutely professionally.

I think there is more to this than meets the ear.
