[Mishmash] Report: Daschle Delayed Tax Revelation

The true issue today is that most of what is pushed on us as "news" is anything but . . .and that really started when the boradcast news divisions becaome profit centers.

My daughter-in-law is a producer for the fox news channel . . . the criteria there is not news value, but whatever "rates".

I guess I have two sets of feelings about what we see and hear and (if anyone still does) read . . . the poor state of the raw skill sets of the people involved (just watch the screen "crawl" . . . bet you can't go 5 minutes without finding at least one typo), and the presentation of editorial opinion ans news (or the lack of making any distinction).

The true definition of journalism which is as follows:

    >1 a: the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media

     b: the public press

c: an academic study concerned with the collection and editing of news or the management of a news medium

2 a: writing designed for publication in a newspaper or magazine

b: writing characterized by a direct presentation of facts or description of events without an attempt at interpretation

c: writing designed to appeal to current popular taste or public interest >

It would be nice to have my news as 2b but it seems as though sometimes the news media in today's world leans on 2c.

Some people don't want their news interpretated, they prefer to interpret it themselves, and although it is nice to hear others interpretations sometimes there are those who grab on to others opinions or interpretations and will not be open to any other interpretation or the real facts ( not meaning anyone here, meaning some, not all tv viewers of news) but then they have to take up the news hour or special hour with something. It's the edit part in 1a that bothers me somewhat. I think sometimes that there are those who edit the news to make it a 2 c. It helps the ratings.

Presidents have historically been making not so good choices for cabinet positions and other public offices. The first four years are very important if they want to come back for a second term, and it seems like they would want to chose strong backgrounds and investigate those backgrounds thoroughly before making choices but it don't always happen that way. History notes that often.. ; possibly they think any good parts of the person or accomplishments, overweighs the bad or not so good, that's not a good thought and only a thought on my part as myself along with countless others can't figure out why some are chosen, and we can only hope that the statement "you are who you chose" is not always the scenario.

Actually I think the benchmarks are a) poor language skills and b) blond hair.

Reporting and journalism don't even appear to enter into the discussion.

The days of investigative reporting are dead and gone, Fred. The benchmarks for today's media are "if it bleeds, it leads" and "if it's scum, it runs".

Daschle does not deserve to be in anyone's cabinet, least of all the current one. It is beyond me why he was chosen.
