Dick,

I forget to tell you the story about the sewer to the house. This is
going to surprise you.

When you sell a house here in Las Cruces, you must declare on your
paperwork whether the house is on sewer or on a septic tank. The
documents said sewer.

I did some calling around to find out who my utility providers were
going to be (we have about five water companies in the area and
several gas companies. El Paso Electric covers electricity for most
of our area).

It turned out that the City of Las Cruces' Government provided most
of my utilities. When I spoke to them, they told me that they
provided water, gas, and trash pickup for that address.

I asked them about sewer. They told me that they never provided
sewer service to that address. I asked if there were any others who
provided sewer hookup in that area. They told me that they were the
only one in that area.

I called my realtor. She called the seller's realtor. They sent a
plumber out to investigate.

The seller belongs to my church. She told me that when she and her
husband signed the documents to buy the house [twenty-six years ago]
that the documents said that the house was on a sewer hookup.

The plumber dug some test holes. Then suddenly, 'clunk'. He found a
septic tank, sure enough.

It was a choice between paying to replace the septic tank (can you
imagine what kind of condition it was in after not being serviced for
twenty-six years or maybe more?) or connect to the sewer (we'd have
had to start all over with the paperwork if she did that). My guess
is that there wasn't a big difference in cost.

She decided to get the house connected to the sewer, which I'm very
glad for. So they ran a trench from the house to the sewer and
hooked me up.

     Regards,

                                              Fred
