Susan,

Emma Sansom was born in Social Circle, Georgia. Her family moved to
Gadsden before the Civil War erupted. I've got a book about her life
and I read it.

Did you know that her hero was Joan of Arc? She learned about Joan
of Arc while she went into Gadsden and saw a used book about Joan of
Arc on sale at a local store. Her mother had made a present of fifty
cents for her to spend. The book cost forty and she kept reading it.
From then on she kept saying that some day she was going to do
something great. And (as all of us Rebels know) she did.

Did you also know that the Confederate Congress awarded her a gold
medal before the end of the war? Did you know that the state of
Alabama awarded her a plot of land after the war? Is it any wonder
that the people of her birthplace erected a stone marker in her
honor?

I met a woman at our local church in Marietta whose name was Sansom
before she was married. She was also from Social Circle, Georgia and
told me that she is a blood relative of Emma Sansom.

     Regards,

                                          Fred Atkinson
