Hi, Tony,
Look at this:

This dog looks exactly like the dog we got after we moved
away from Gadsden to Columbia, SC.
Her name was Heidi. She was an exceptionally intelligent
animal and one hundred and twenty-five pounds of all lean
dog. Believe it or not, she used to ring the back doorbell when she
wanted to come inside. She wouldn't come inside for us unless she
rang the doorbell first.
She was very much a family dog. My parents had had her for
quite a number of years (well after most of us had left home). My
oldest sister's oldest daughter (Melissa) came over to visit one day
while I was home from Indianapolis visiting.
I had broken Heidi of aggression of any sort against the
family when she was a pup. But that didn't stop her from defending
us if a stranger came into the house.
Heidi was laying in the corner. Melissa came over to 'pat'
her. The problem was that little Melissa's 'patting' was more like hitting.
I saw it out of the corner of my eye. The dog moaned, I
headed for the corner as fast as I could to keep Melissa from getting bitten.
But the dog got up and walked away never even showing her
teeth. She knew that Melissa was family.
I grabbed Heidi and then hugged and praised her for such
good behavior.
But when I scolded Melissa, she broke into tears. It took
me a little bit to get her to stop crying.
So I taught Melissa how to pat Heidi the right way. Heidi
would just lay still with her eyes focused on Melissa and her ears
perked up while Melissa would pat her.
Melissa would babble at Heidi with her baby talk and it
appeared that Heidi understood every word of it. It was so cute.
Regards,
Fred
