Subject: Report from West, Texas: A tremendous need
A message from Steve Elliott, Grassfire
Kathy,
Grassfire has been very generous in supporting the work of Mercy Chefs in their mission to feed the victims of the devastating blast that leveled part of the town of West, Texas.
Yesterday the Mercy Chefs team delivered 700 meals to those hurting people, the first responders and volunteers working the recovery efforts.
++West, Texas has a tremendous need!
As Gary LeBlanc, President of Mercy Chefs reported to me today, the scope of the damage there, the magnitude of the blast is unfathomable. He was shocked to learn that the church where they have staged Mercy Chefs Mobile Kitchen 1 has a portion of the building moved off of its foundation -- and it's a good half mile from the blast's ground zero.
But what is always amazing is hearing the testimonies of the victims.
Two couples shared with a member of the Grassfire team, on site with Mercy Chefs, how their lives were spared because unexpected circumstances prevented them from being home the night that the blast destroyed the apartment complex where they lived.
Another couple shared the heart wrenching testimony of their elderly relative who was outside the senior center when the blast hit -- and is now permanently blind and facing numerous surgeries to restore her facial features. Others are still fighting for their lives.
Many people here have lost everything, yet are still thankful for their lives, the hot meals being provided and for the generosity of people across the nation who cared enough to make a donation and offer up fervent prayers.
This community has a long way to go in the ongoing recovery operations and its rebuilding efforts to come.
++The work of Mercy Chefs is recognized
The officers in the Disaster Command Center there were very grateful when Mercy Chefs arrived with 50 hot meals of pepper steak!
One national relief organization called on Mercy Chefs last night to provide them with meals to distribute after running out of their supplies and learned of Mercy Chefs reputation for quality food.
It was truly a God-send that Mercy Chefs Mobile Kitchen was only 70 miles away when the blast hit and the team of volunteers were readily available when the call came for help.
If you haven't already done so, please consider a special gift today to help Mercy Chefs bring food and hope and the prayers of the nation to the people of the town of West, Texas.<http://www.grassrootsaction.com/r.asp?U=244526&RID=38769125>
