Folks,

At lunch and Sunday School today, several people expressed how unhappy they were about two of the four elevators not working at Carlsbad Caverns and the havoc that came with that during our July 4th Weekend Singles trip.

At lunch today, I issued a challenge for them to call Steve Pearce's office and tell his staff how they felt about Obama spending millions of dollars on an African vacation but the federal government can't spend a few thousand dollars to fix those elevators.

Karen said she'd do it if I would send the contact information to everyone. So, I am doing just that. His toll-free number is: 855-473-2723.

I'm challenging each of you to call and tell his staff how you feel about it. And you can tell them whatever else is on your mind about how this nation is being run while you have them on the phone. Let me assure you that I have called his office a number of times and they've always been glad to hear from me. You will have the same experience. Be polite when you speak to them as you will find that they are very interested in your opinions.

I suggest that when they answer, give your name and tell them you live in Las Cruces before expressing your opinion(s). Here is an example of what I might say when I call them:

"My name is Fred Atkinson and I live in Las Cruces. Over the holiday weekend, I visited Carlsbad Caverns with a group from my church. I was absolutely shocked to discover that two of the elevators that are used to transport people in and out of the caves were not operational and had been out of service for three years because the Forest Service does not have the funds needed to repair them.

This caused a number of people to have to stand in line for between one and two hours before exiting the caves through those elevators. Additionally, a very large number of people who tired of waiting for the elevators were walking back out of the caves in the opposite direction of pedestrian traffic which crowded the caverns and ultimately made the experience far less enjoyable for everyone.

I am absolutely outraged that President Obama can spend one hundred million dollars of taxpayer money on an African vacation and yet the federal government cannot come up with a few thousand dollars to fix those elevators over a three year period.

As Carlsbad Caverns is in New Mexico [which is the state that you represent], I would ask that you do whatever you can to arrange appropriation of the additional funds needed to repair and maintain those elevators in good operating condition.

Thank you very much for speaking with me today."

I am going to make this call, too!

Here is Steve Pearce's contact information (including his toll-free number again so the call won't cost you a cent):

Las Cruces
570 N Telshor Blvd
Las Cruces, NM 88011
Phone: 855-4-PEARCE (732723)

             His Web site is: http://pearce.house.gov

And you can call him again any time there is something on your mind that you want you Congressman to know about. You can also call our Senators by looking up their contact information on the Senate Web site: http://www.senate.gov . Click on 'Senators' and then 'Choose a state'. Then select New Mexico and their contact information will pop up. You can call them and tell them the same thing, if you want to. Or if you have any other opinions, tell them that, too!

If you want to contact the White House on this matter, their Web site is: http://www.whitehouse.gov , the President's email is: president at whitehouse.gov , and their phone number is: 202-456-1111.

How far you go with this is entirely up to you. But I think you'll find that you will feel pretty good about yourself for letting your politician(s) know what is on your mind and how you stand on the issues.

             Regards,

                                                                                Fred
